Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

Sentimental Value's exceptional response 204j2n

Joachim Trier returned to the Cannes Film Festival after his critically acclaimed film The Worst Person in the World premiered during the 2021 festival, both films star actress Renate Rensive, who won the award for Best Actress at the festival for her role in The Worst Person in the World. With its premiere on Wednesday, May 21st, Joachim Trier's newest film Sentimental Value cemented itself in the history books. Receiving an extremely impressive 19-minute standing ovation after the film's conclusion, it became the third longest standing ovation at Cannes, previously held by Mud which was given an 18-minute standing ovation in 2012. The two films that received the longest standing ovations are, respectively, 2004's Fahrenheit 9/11, which received a 20-minute standing ovation, and 2006's Pan's Labyrinth, which received a staggering 22-minute standing ovation —the longest in the history of the festival.

Does this mean that Sentimental Value already has the Palme d'Or in the bag? Not exactly, almost all of the films that have received the longest-standing ovations haven't won, there is only one film in the list of the top ten longest-standing ovations that has won, and it isn't the world record holder. Surprisingly, it was the film in second place, Fahrenheit 9/11 that both won the Palme d'Or and sits in the top ten list for this record. This incredible landmark for the film isn't an indicator of whether or not it will win tomorrow, on the contrary, since most of the best-received films based on standing ovations have not won, there is a large statistical chance that this film won't win.

Win or lose, Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value is a masterpiece and will get the praise it deserves outside of the festival solely based on word of mouth and the impressively long reaction to the film from the crowd at its premiere. This is an amazing movie, that cannot be suggested enough, and it deserves all of the attention and awards it will acquire after its release date is announced and distributed to the public in the next coming months.
