The Brits Are Back At TIFF so2o

It has been a difficult few months for the British film industry. Not only has the economic recession made the film business even more challenging, but the controversy surrounding the shuttering of the UK Film Council has been acriminious, amidst charges of economic abuse and political favoritism. Even the venerable London Film Festival, which unspools next month, losts its main corporate sponsors and had to scramble to find replacements. However, based on the bounty of British film...

*Raindance Preview Review* HUGE (2010) dir Ben Miller w1je

#
Ben Miller's first delivery as a film director is just as amateur as it sounds. Miller, of British comedy duo Armstrong & Miller, should be able to tackle the subject of his first film better than anyone else: the nature of a comedy duo. However, the story of the film feels old, too predictable and doesn't add anything new to the "comedian film". The story basically tells the story of Warren and Clark, a would-be comedy duo who have more in common with an old couple tha...

Clickin' for Love 4k4o3n

Director: Pablo Pappano.
Is the world of online dating full of those who can’t survive in the real dating world? What is the average person’s experience? Do most people find their true love and end up as living, breathing eHarmony commercials, or do most give up in disappointment? After using Craigslist to find people willing to do on-camera interviews about their online dating experiences, I quickly discovered that many people had a lot in common—especially their larger-than-life personalities. Audrey is a forty-something would-be actress who fell in love with a mysterious South African boat captain. Marty is an affable, middle-aged father-of-three and swinger with a “black book” containing thousands of names who hopes to find a wife online. Colleen is a single chef who doesn’t want either a one night stand or a boyfriend. She wants something in between. Thirty-something Andy uses online dating and matchmakers but hasn’t found that special someone. Although he did find a woman who, on their first date, offered him $100,000 to father her child. After recording all of these insightful - and sometimes crazy - stories about the world of online dating, I knew I had a fantastic and original movie to make. Internet dating has been around for more than a decade, but it still isn't clear whether online dating really works. Is “happily ever after” a realistic goal for online daters? Find out by watching Clickin' for Love.

Director: Matthew Pellowski.
The story revolves around an iconic actress on the skids, making a play for a comeback with a late night talk show host.

Partial Creation of "Fetish" with Joan Collins by Charles Casillo i4k28

#
It was 1 am on a frigid February morning and Joan Collins’ boots were getting a haircut. We were supposed to shoot the outdoor scene earlier in the day but because of the non-stop snowstorm, filming kept being delayed. A team of crew continuously shoveled the balcony and tried to keep the ground dry–all the better to keep legendary goddess from being electrocuted while shooting. As the snow fell and the city came to a halt, the lights were being set up by the grips and electrical dep...

Russellmania: The Missing Movie 2i634x

No offense to Argentine screen vamp Coca Sarli, but Ken Russell is one hell of an act to follow.   This weekend the Film Society of Lincoln Center is presenting Fuego: The Films of Isabel “Coca” Sarli, and while entries like Leopoldo Torre Nilsson's The Female: Seventy Times Seven look plenty enticing – Sarli plays a femme fatale who undid both her husband and her lover – it's doubtful the three-day series will spark epiphanies like the Film Society's Russellmania.  On J...

Ken Russell: Love Or Hate But Can't Ignore 6f4r58

There are a few film directors whose appeal splits people right down the middle. Some hate the work and some are devoted groupies. However, if the response to a particular director bridges the entire spectrum, then it is all the proof needed that this talented film artist's sensibility cannot be ignored. For myself, always a sucker for the sweeping operatic gesture in film, I find myself to be a disciple of the British director Ken Russell. Russell did not think small in hi...

From An Education to One Day 35375e

An Education: Lone Sherfig's last film An Education (2009) won her Academy Award nominations for Best Motion Picture and Best Actress for Carey Mulligan and Best Sceenwriting adaptation. Her next film, One Day (2011), is in production now.    I met Lone in January in California on a for her US premier of An Education, an unusual dark romantic comedy/drama inspired by a memoir about Rachmanism in London during the 1960's. The main antagonist David (played by P...

The Imaginarium of Anastasia Masaro 564b2o

Interview with Production Designer Anastasia Masaro on The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus (2009). Other than being the last film that Oscar winning actor Heath Ledger acted in, this has to be one of the most visually stunning films I've ever seen. David Lynch and Tim Burton have some serious rivalry here on cinematic surrealism. The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus (2009) is like a walk through a Dali meets Ernst painting, on Absinthe!  ME: Hi Anastasia, thank you so much for taking time to...

Olivia Newton-John in SCORE: A HOCKEY MUSICAL 3vj46

Toronto FF Opens With Hockey Musical f3z45

Olivia Newton-John in SCORE: A HOCKEY MUSICAL Toronto and hockey......a match made in maple leaf heaven. Add music and icon Olivia Newton-John to the mix and you've got the ingredients for a fun and campy film delight. Well, that delightful concoction, the first hockey musical that I've ever heard tell of, will be the Opening Night Gala for the Toronto International Film Festival in September. The Festival hosts the world premiere of SCORE: A HOCKEY MUSICAL by Canadian writ...

National Theatre Live: A Hybrid of Film, Television and Theater 1r2f6d

In these days of high cost travel and rapidly shrinking bank s, I quietly considered the bundle I had saved by not needing to board the Concorde to attend the hit London production of the Victorian satire LONDON ASSURANCE, the latest offering from the National Theatre's worldwide satellite broadcasts. Sitting in the plush, air-conditioned environment of the Jacob Burns Film Center thirty miles from New York City, I could only marvel at the experience of a delicious "nig...

The Global Film Village: Sir Sean Connery has reunited with the classic Aston Martin DB5 5m4q

by Marc Halperin The latest James Bond film is on hold because of financial problems at MGM and Connery has been replaced by a string of new Bonds that still haven't overcome his signature performance. Russell Crowe has stepped into the role of Robin Hood.  Sir Sean hasn't been seen in a new movie since 2003's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen as Alan Quartermain. Some of us still think he was the last definitive Robin Hood in 1976's Robin and Marion with the wonderful ...
